Ministry Of Agriculture To Increase Support For Crimean Wine Growers

The largest wine region of Russia is located in the Crimean region. The government will increase support of the wine growers to the tune of 278 million rubles. The funds will be not only be used to maintain current vineyards, but also to create new vineyards to help meet the demand of approximately 200 thousand tons of grapes required regionally. Thus far, the region is only able to supply about one quarter of the current demand. There are also plans to develop a more sustainable irrigation system throughout the region which will aid the wine growers in meeting their production goals. Over the past three years vineyards have expanded rapidly in the region - growing by a little over two times.

  1. I found this story quite interesting. I understand that there is a trend in Russia to support this industry because wine has a lower alcohol content than spirits, and is seen as a healthier alternative.
